-
- Actually, I agree.
-
- I *detest* the CDA. I also happen to have sexual content in my personal
- web pages and I have been an active member on discussion groups involving
- adult issues since 1989 when I first hit the nets. So I don't look very
- highly on the government telling me what I can and can't say.
-
- But I do think it is a good think for there to be tools out there for
- people to police themselves so that the government doesn't have to say
- anything. If an ISP wants to setup a kiddie account service and use our
- system, or anyone else's, to do it - I think that is great.
-
- I do not expect this to be used to police the nets for everyone, I would
- strongly hope that it is used only in special cases for accounts that
- choose to have this applied. I would MUCH rather users be given the option
- of restricting their own access or their childrens access then everyone be
- forced to talk baby talk.
-
- Now, that said, the technology is basically dynamically generated and
- downloaded filters from a central server. That is good for *ANYONE* using
- our filters with more than one unit.
-
- It means you don't have to put the filters in each unit individually anymore.
- It means you'll have more FLASH free. It means you can make any changes just
- once and not have to admin each unit. It makes it harder to cause security
- holes by errors of ommission (forgetting to put the filter in some unit).
-
- It addresses a lot of the common problems we see with users of filtering,
- and the ability to download filters dynamically has been something the
- user community has been demanding for a long time.
-
- And the core technology we developed for this might have other uses, maybe
- downloadable location tables, etc. The future is variable.
-
- There is really nothing here that couldn't have been done already. You
- could have done tight 'kiddie' filters with our standard filtering technology
- but it would have been harder - filters would be static instead of dynamic
- from an access list, and you would have to do them in each unit seperately.
-
- I wasn't especially happy with the tone of the release (start counting, the
- head of marketing will probably be in to yell at me *again* over this. Hey,
- this is my opinion) since it is too close to the censorship angle for my
- tastes.
-
- As an engineer I see it as a very useful tool for anyone using filtering on
- a Livingston box. It is a tool, how it gets used it up to the users.

-
- Just so you realize that most of the engineers here have the same view of
- the articles that we've seen so far, but the press is hot on this kiddie
- issue now so I'm not surprised really.
